Memorable TV (The television, dvd and entertainment website)
Genre: Fantasy adventure epic with a voice of its own.
Plotline: Book Two in the Valisar trilogy about a ruthless Tyrant, Loethar, and his plans to take over the Kingdom of Penraven in order to gain the magical powers that the King of the Valisars possesses.
In Book One, Royal Exile, Loethar set about creating his own Denova Empire and having swept aside many realms in his quest, he set his sights on Penraven, whose King Brennus, like all of the Valisar descendants, has the power of coercion, able to bend people to his will. Loethar becomes convinced that if he overthrows Brennus he can take on his powers too. Book Two picks up some ten years later and Loethar is happily ensconced as ruler of Penrvan, convinced that all legitimate heirs to the crown are dead he is busy with integrating the people of his growing empire. However not all of the Valisars have been wiped out and a growing resistance movement is determined to bring down Loethar and everything he stands for once and for all.
Verdict: Epic of scale and fantastically told, this exciting second installment of the Valisar trilogy, should draw in fans of historical action as well as the traditional fantasy fan. McIntosh pulls no punches in her tale either adding a bone crunching sense of realism to proceedings at times too. Roll on the third and final volume.
